What will l learn in Year 8

In year 8 you will explore the key areas of Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy. In doing this we will focus on the following topics:

  • Computing systems:
    • Understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
    • Evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
    • Understand simple Boolean logic [for example, AND, OR and NOT] and some of its uses in circuits and programming
    • Understand the hardware and software components that make up computer systems, and how they communicate with one another and with other systems
  • Understand how instructions are stored and executed within a computer system
  • Modelling Data – Spreadsheets:
    • Design, use, and evaluate computational abstractions that model the state and behaviour of real-world problems and physical systems
    • Undertake creative projects that involve selecting, using, and combining multiple applications, preferably across a range of devices, to achieve challenging goals, including collecting and analysing data and meeting the needs of known users
  • Programming essentials in Scratch
    • Use two or more programming languages, at least one of which is textual, to solve a variety of computational problems; make appropriate use of data structures (e.g. lists, tables, or arrays); design and develop modular programs that use procedures or functions
    • Understand several key algorithms that reflect computational thinking; use logical reasoning to compare the utility of alternative algorithms for the same problem
    • Understand simple Boolean logic (e.g. and, or, and not)
    • Create, reuse, revise, and repurpose digital artefacts for a given audience, with attention to trustworthiness, design, and usability

What will l learn in Year 9 Computing

In year 9 you develop a deeper within the key areas of Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy. We will focus on the following topics:

  • Cyber Security:
  • Understand a range of ways to use technology safely, respectfully, responsibly, and securely, including protecting your online identity and privacy
  • Recognise inappropriate content, contact, and conduct, and know how to report concerns
  • Data science:
  • Undertake creative projects that involve selecting, using, and combining multiple applications, preferably across a range of devices, to achieve challenging goals, including collecting and analysing data and meeting the needs of known users
  • Introduction to Python programming:
    • understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
    • analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
    • use two or more programming languages, at least one of which is textual, to solve a variety of computational problems
    • understand several key algorithms that reflect computational thinking; use logical reasoning to compare the utility of alternative algorithms for the same problem
    • understand how instructions are stored and executed within a computer system
    • design, use and evaluate computational abstractions that model the state and behaviour of real-world problems and physical systems

What will l learn in Year 9 SIS

In year 9 you will develop a range of skills which will help you undertake creative projects using Photoshop, multimedia software and web development software. We will focus on the following topics:

  • Creating Digital Graphics:
    • Exploration of the idea of audience and purpose and their importance in creative media development
    • Development of skills in Photoshop / graphics packages
    • Creation of visualisation diagrams for a graphic project
    • Creation of a digital graphic to meet a given with specified audience and purpose.
  • Evaluation of a digital graphic
  • Creating Interactive Multimedia Products:
    • Creation of mood boards for a specific multimedia product scenario
    • Exploration of what multimedia is and what the properties of the individual elements which compose multimedia are
    • Investigation into the different impairments people may need to overcome when using technology and how an interactive product can be made accessible for all users.
    • Development of multimedia creation skills.
    • Creation of an interactive multimedia product based on a given scenario with a specified audience and purpose.
  • Evaluation of an interactive multimedia product.
  • Creating Multi-Page Websites:
    • Exploration into the threats surrounding and inherent in the use of digital media, including malware and responsible use.
    • Investigation into the impact of the use of technology, particularly online technologies, on our lives as a society.
    • Development of website creation skills
    • Creation of a multi-page website based around a given scenario with a specified audience and purpose.
    • Evaluation of a multi-page product.
